Wang Jiayang

Wang Jiayang (; March 12, 1918 – January 19, 2020) was a Chinese Communist revolutionary and politician who served as Chairman of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). A native of Ninghai County, Zhejiang, he participated in revolutionary activities in the late 1930s and joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1939. He held various political and trade union leadership positions before and after the establishment of the People's Republic of China, including Secretary of the CCP Haidian District Committee of Beijing, Vice Governor of Zhejiang, and President of Hangzhou University.

Biography

Wang was born on March 12, 1918, in Ninghai County, Zhejiang. He graduated from Huipu Middle School in Linhai. Around 1937, he became involved in revolutionary activities and formally began his political career. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in June 1939.

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Wang worked in Communist-controlled areas in eastern China. He successively served as Party branch secretary of the mass movement work team on Chongming Island, head of the publicity department of the Qidong County Working Committee in Jiangsu, secretary of several district-level Party committees in the Haimen–Qidong and Rugao regions, political commissar of local armed units, Organization Department head and deputy secretary of the Dongtai County Party Committee, Secretary of the Taibei County Party Committee, political commissar of the county security regiment, and Secretary of the Jiangyin County Party Committee.

After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Wang continued working in trade union and administrative positions. He served as a member of the CCP Wuxi Municipal Committee, Vice Chairman and Deputy Party Secretary of the Wuxi Federation of Trade Unions, Secretary-General and Deputy Chairman of the Southern Jiangsu Federation of Trade Unions, member of the Supervisory Committee of the Southern Jiangsu Administrative Office, and First Vice Chairman and Deputy Party Secretary of the Jiangsu Federation of Trade Unions.

In September 1956, Wang was transferred to the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, where he successively served as Director of the Production Department, Director of the General Office, Secretary of the Secretariat, and a member of the Party Leadership Group. During the Cultural Revolution, he was politically persecuted and suffered setbacks.

After 1972, Wang was appointed Secretary of the CCP Haidian District Committee of Beijing and Director of the Haidian District Revolutionary Committee. He later served as deputy director of the Beijing Revolutionary Committee Construction Commission and Director of its Political Department.

In May 1978, Wang was transferred to Zhejiang, where he became a member of the Standing Committee of the CCP Zhejiang Provincial Committee, Head of the Provincial Publicity Department, and President of Hangzhou University. In May 1981, he became a member of the Standing Committee of the CCP Zhejiang Provincial Committee and Vice Governor of Zhejiang Province. In April 1983, he was appointed Chairman of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Secretary of its Party Leadership Group, serving until his retirement in February 1994.

Wang was also Chairman of the 5th Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the CPPCC and a member of the 7th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. From 1994 to 2000, he served as the first President of the China International Tea Culture Research Association.

Wang Jiayang died in Hangzhou on January 19, 2020, at the age of 101.
