Jiří Velemínský

Jiří Velemínský (21 November 1933, in České Budějovice – 23 February 2008, in Prague) was a pioneering Czech plant geneticist. He was a founding member of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic and held many high positions in the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. He was a member of editorial boards of several scientific journals, including Biologia Plantarum.

He continued to work until his death in Prague on 23 February 2008, aged 74.

Awards In 2007 he received the Honorary Medal of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, De Scientia Et Humanitate Optime Meritis.

Personal and family life Jiří Velemínský was a distant cousin of the physician and scientist Friedrich Weleminsky. He lived in Prague with his wife Dagmar (Daca; née Koflak), whom he married in 1961. They had two sons: Petr (born 1964) and Martin (born 1971).
