About Albert Blakey

Albert Edward Howarth Blakey (9 November 1879 – 4 July 1935) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and served as a Senator for Victoria from 1910 to 1917.

Early life Blakey was born on 9 November 1879 in Balmoral, Victoria. He was the son of Louise (née Woodford) and William Henry Blakey. His father worked as a fellmonger and woolclasser.

After leaving school, Blakey was apprenticed to a civil engineer for a period. He settled in Hamilton where he worked as a clerk for a stock and land agency associated with Alfred Tennyson Dickens. Blakey was active in the labour movement from a young age as an early member of the Victorian Clerks' Union. He was a senior vice-president of the Australian Natives' Association and an unsuccessful candidate for the presidency in 1917. He had remained loyal to the ALP during the 1916 split over conscription.
