William Henry Lloyd (December 10, 1911 – September 21, 1969) was an American real estate broker, heraldist, genealogist, and civic leader based in Baltimore, Maryland. He played a significant role in the mid‑twentieth‑century revival of American heraldry and in the growth of lineage societies in Maryland. Lloyd co‑founded the American College of Heraldry and Arms, served as the first president of the Huguenot Society of Maryland, and was the Republican nominee for the United States House of Representatives in 1942.
Early life Lloyd was born on December 10, 1911, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, the youngest child of John Strawbridge Lloyd Sr. (1872–1918) and Edith Mercer Parker Lloyd (1875–1953). After his father’s death in 1918, the family remained in the Philadelphia area. By 1930 they had moved to Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
Lloyd relocated to Dorchester County, Maryland in the mid‑1930s with his mother and siblings.
Career, military, and politics Lloyd worked professionally as a real estate broker in Baltimore.
During World War II, Lloyd served as a corporal in the United States Army and received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. His military rank and decoration are recorded on his headstone at Old Saint David’s Church Cemetery.
Lloyd was Republican nominee for the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland’s 1st Congressional District in the 1942 general election, running against Democratic incumbent David J. Ward.
Historical societies Lloyd co‑founded the American College of Heraldry and Arms in 1966 with Donald Franklin Stewart, Charles Francis Stein Jr., and Gordon Malvern Fair Stick.
On March 31, 1968, Lloyd hosted the organizing meeting of the Huguenot Society of Maryland at his home in Baltimore. He served as the society’s first president until his death in 1969. The American Huguenot Society described his passing as an “incalculable loss.”
Lloyd was active in the Society of the War of 1812 in Maryland, serving as its 38th State President, and in the Society for the History of the Germans in Maryland.
Death and burial Lloyd died on September 21, 1969, in Baltimore at age 57. Although he had lived in Maryland for more than three decades, he was buried at Old Saint David’s Church Cemetery in Wayne, Pennsylvania, where his parents and several siblings are interred.
