Morton Smart

Sir Morton Warrack Smart, GCVO, DSO (1 December 1877 – 16 March 1956) was a Scottish manipulative surgeon who served George V, Edward VIII, George VI and Elizabeth II.

Early life and education Smart was born in Edinburgh on 1 December 1877, the son of the painter John Smart and Agnes Purdie, née Main. He attended George Watson's College and the University of Edinburgh; he served in the South African War, before graduating with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from Edinburgh in 1902. Career Smart then moved to London, where he was given an appointment at Great Ormond Street Hospital (taking charge of the X-ray department). His interests shifted towards orthopedic medicine, particularly manipulative surgery, and he received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Edinburgh in 1912 for a thesis on faradism. in 1917.
