Early life Kurbanov was born in 1905 in Üch-Korgon, , Russian Turkestan, to a Tajik family. His family were poor farmers. He studied to become a miner and then worked at the Kyzyl-Kyya mine in Osh from 1924 to 1930, after which he served as the head of the mine's rescue and safety station from 1930 to 1931, and as the overall head of the mine from 1931 to 1933. Two years later, he became a member of the Central Auditing Commission of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, where he served until 1952. In 1946, he was abruptly removed from office, later revealed to be due to his support for the Tajik SSR to have more autonomy from the Soviet Union. A film on his life, Mamadali Kurbanov (Мамадали Курбанов), was made in 2018, and a book on his life was written by Boris Rakhmanov, called A Titan of the Socialist Era (Титан Эпохи Социализма).
