Kafil Ahmed (; born 1 September 1962) is a Bangladeshi poet, singer-songwriter, and visual artist. He is known for pioneering Sarbapraner Gaan ("Songs for All Beings"), a genre of contemporary Bengali soul and political folk music derived from traditional Ganasangeet and spiritual folk traditions. His work "Gangaburi" served as the conceptual foundation for a major public river-heritage project organized by the Brihatta Art Foundation along the Buriganga River.
Early life and education Kafil Ahmed was born on 1 September 1962 in Kishoreganj District, East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh). During his university years, he published his debut poetry collection, Junction, through Brintok Publishers in 1987.
Career
Literary and musical work A self-taught vocalist and composer, Ahmed began arranging tunes in the 1990s for the ancient Charyageeti manuscripts, setting early Bengali mystical poems to contemporary melodies with traditional instruments and theatrical elements.
In 2002, he released his debut musical collection, Pakhi Shob Kore Rab (popularly known as Mighty Power in Wings of Feather, Maya in the Eyes of Cows), under Ghorautra Production in Dhaka. The album reintroduced classical Shomogeet and mass political music (Ganasangeet) into mainstream Bangladeshi youth culture. He later formed cultural activism platforms, including Mon Kohuar Gaan and Sarbapran Sangskritik Shakti.
Notable songs "Gangaburi" (গঙ্গাবুড়ি): Ahmed's most celebrated song and poem, centered on nature and ecological heritage, which inspired Brihatta Art Foundation's multi-year river conservation and public art project. "Pakhi Shob Kore Rab" (পাখি সব করে রব / পাখির ডানায় দারুণ শক্তি): The title track of his 2002 album, blending folk spirituality with social consciousness. "Agune Ghumai Agune Khai" (আগুনে ঘুমাই আগুনে খাই): A political mass-song (Ganasangeet) widely performed in live activist spaces. "Masanobofukuoka" (মাসানোবোফুকোওকা): An ecological composition named after Japanese natural farming pioneer Masanobu Fukuoka. "Bagh Bondi Shingho Bondi" (বাঘ বন্দি সিংহ বন্দি): A resistance song addressing state power and social oppression.
Impact and collaboration with Brihatta Art Foundation Ahmed's poetic works have significantly influenced contemporary visual art and ecology movements in Bangladesh. His acclaimed song and poem "Gangaburi" inspired a multi-phase public art initiative titled *Gangaburi* led by the Brihatta Art Foundation. The foundation named the river-heritage project after Ahmed's work, organizing traveling art exhibitions on riverboats along the Buriganga River to advocate for ecological preservation and highlight riverine culture.
Visual art In addition to his literary and musical career, Ahmed is an accomplished watercolorist. His paintings, often focusing on nature, socio-political struggle, and rural life, have been featured in group exhibitions across Bangladesh.
