John Derby Smith (April 9, 1812 – April 26, 1884) was an American minister, physician, and Massachusetts state legislator.
Early life John Derby Smith was born on April 9, 1812, in Hanover, New Hampshire, as the youngest son of Nathan Smith. His father became the head of the Yale School of Medicine in 1813.
Smith graduated from Yale College in 1832. He continued as pastor in Charlemont from June 1848 to May 1852. He married Mary M. Dole of Charlemont on April 22, 1849. She died in 1854. He married Susan A. Anthony, daughter of Dr. J. H. Anthony, of Providence, Rhode Island, on April 12, 1855. She died in 1883. He had many children, including one son who graduated from Yale Medical College.
Smith died of a liver ailment on April 26, 1884, at his home in the village of Scotland, Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
