About James J. Coleman

Born 1950. James J. Coleman is an American electrical engineer.

James J. Coleman is the Intel Alumni Endowed Chair Emeritus in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research interests include the epitaxial growth and processing of semiconductor materials and devices, especially metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), strained-layer quantum well heterostructure lasers, and integrated photonics.

Career Coleman received BS (1972), MS (1973), and PhD (1975) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. After graduation, Coleman began working at AT&T Bell Laboratories (Murray Hill, NJ) in 1976 as a Member of Technical Staff. From 1978 to 1982 he was a Member of Technical Staff at Rockwell International (Anaheim, CA). In 1982, he returned to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as Associate Professor and was promoted to Professor in 1984. He was named the Franklin W. Woeltge Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (2002) and the Intel Alumni Endowed Chair in Electrical and Computer Engineering (2003).

Coleman is a Fellow of OSA (now Optica), IEEE, SPIE, American Physical Society, Materials Research Society, and AAAS. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

He was President of the IEEE Photonics Society in 2010-2011.

Research Coleman studies epitaxial growth and processing of semiconductor materials and devices, especially liquid phase epitaxy (LPE), metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD and strained-layer quantum well heterostructures. His primary interest is semiconductor diode lasers, including quantum well, quantum dot, and strained layer lasers, as well as integrated photonic devices.

He has published more than 400 scientific papers and holds 10 U.S. patents.

Honors IEEE Jun-ichi Nishizawa Medal (2021) John Bardeen Award, TMS - The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (2020) John Tyndall Award, IEEE Photonics Society and Optical Society of America (2013) SPIE Technical Achievement Award (2011) IEEE David Sarnoff Award (2008) Nick Holonyak, Jr. Award, Optical Society of America (2006) ISCS Heinrich Welker Award (2004) William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award, IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (2000)
