Soala Ibiapuye Martyns-Yellowe was elected Senator for the Rivers West constituency of Rivers State, Nigeria at the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic, running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He took office on 29 May 1999. He was reelected in April 2003.

Martyns-Yellowe was born on 12 November 1945 in Bakana, Degema Local Government Area, Rivers State. He qualified as a neuro-psychiatrist, and served as chief medical director of the Rivers State Psychiatric Hospital, Rumuigbo, Port Harcourt. After taking his seat in the Senate in June 1999 he was appointed to committees on Drug & Narcotics, Petroleum (Chairman) and Health. In 2007, he was a contender in the PDP primary election to be candidate for Rivers State governor.

Early life and education

Ibiapuye Soala Martyns-Yellowe was born on 12 November 1945 in Bakana, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria.

He trained as a medical doctor and obtained his medical qualification in 1973. He later specialized in psychiatry, becoming a neuro-psychiatrist.

Public and Political career

Ibiapuye Soala Martyns-Yellowe was a medical doctor and neuro-psychiatrist before entering politics. He served as Chief Medical Director of the Rivers State Psychiatric Hospital, Rumuigbo, Port Harcourt, before his election into the Nigerian Senate.

Ibiapuye Soala Martyns-Yellowe entered politics during Nigeria's transition to the Fourth Republic. He was elected Senator representing Rivers West Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate in 1999 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He was re-elected in 2003 and served in the Senate until 2007. During his tenure, he chaired the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources and served on other committees, including Health and Drugs and Narcotics.

In 2007, Martyns-Yellowe participated in the Peoples Democratic Party governorship primary election in Rivers State, seeking to become the party's candidate for governor.

Legislative activities

During his tenure in the Nigerian Senate, Ibiapuye Martyns-Yellowe participated in legislative activities relating to petroleum resources, health, and other national issues.

He served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) and was involved in parliamentary discussions on Nigeria's oil and gas sector. He also served as a member of committees including Health and Drugs and Narcotics.

Death Ibiapuye Soala Martyns-Yellowe died on 2 July 2009 in Abuja, Nigeria, after an asthma-related health complication. His death was followed by tributes from political leaders and organisations in Rivers State.
