Gerald Vincent McDevitt

Gerald Vincent McDevitt (February 23, 1917 – September 29, 1980) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia from 1962 until his death in 1980.

Biography Gerald McDevitt was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, one of seven children of Hugh J. and Helen (née Boylan) McDevitt. He received his early education at the parochial school of Our Mother of Sorrows Church in his native city. He attended La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor before beginning his studies for the priesthood at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook.

He studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he earned a doctorate in canon law in 1945. Regarded as a conservative, he was a strong opponent of the ordination of women, divorce, and abortion.

McDevitt died at age 63.
