Abraham Shackleton

Abraham Shackelton (27 October 1696 – 24 June 1771) was an English Quaker and schoolmaster active in Ballitore, County Kildare. Shackleton's private boarding school, open to people of any faith, educated boys from France, England, and other foreign countries. He taught Edmund Burke, who became a statesman and philosopher, and Paul Cullen, later the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin.

Early life and education

Shackleton was born on 27 October 1696 at Shackleton House in the village of Harden, Yorkshire to Richard Shackelton (1643–1705), a yeoman farmer, and Sarah Shackelton (; 1658–1703). (Shackleton's father is also cited as Abraham Shackleton.) Raised in a Quaker household, the family home became a registered Quaker meeting-house the same year Shackleton was born.

On 24 June 1771, Shackleton died in Ballitore aged 74.
