Biography Family and education Thomas Arthur Rickard was born in Crotone, Italy, the son of Thomas Rickard, a Cornish mining engineer. His grandfather was a Cornish miner, Captain James Rickard. His cousin Tom Rickard was mayor of Berkeley, California at the time of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire.
