In November 2019, Tikhonov pleaded President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to personally overlook the criminal prosecution of his attorney son Viktor, who was the former head of the Almaty city prosecutor's office. He believed the arrest and trial of Viktor to be biased and wrongful. He also mentioned that Viktor had 4 children. In September 2022, Viktor was acquitted.
