Patrick Rubinstein

Patrick Rubinstein (born 1960) is a French artist whose work combines elements of Kinetic art, Op art, and Pop art. He creates relief-based artworks that display different images depending on the viewer's position, using folded, three-dimensional supports combined with optical illusion.

Early life Rubinstein was born in Paris in 1960 and grew up in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. As a child, he visited the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, and the Centre Pompidou, which sparked his interest in art. His father, an art collector and amateur painter, introduced him to folded relief structures that produced changing images; his mother encouraged his interest in cinema.

In the late 1970s, Rubinstein began making optical artworks using folded supports made of photographic strips, which reveal different images depending on the viewer's position without electronic or mechanical components. He sold his first artwork at eighteen, around which time he became interested in merging faces, using two portraits of members of the same family to explore their shared and distinguishing features.

He has cited Victor Vasarely, Yaacov Agam, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Jesús Rafael Soto, Bridget Riley, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jean-Michel Basquiat as influences, along with Renaissance painting, Cubism, Surrealism, Expressionism, geometric abstraction, and Pop art.

Before becoming a full-time artist, Rubinstein designed clothing collections, leaving the fashion industry in 2007 to focus on his art practice. It also references cinema, photography, and popular culture.

Around 2019, Rubinstein began incorporating Art Nouveau influences and metallic materials, including gold leaf, silver leaf, sequins, and reflective surfaces, which change the appearance of the compositions under different lighting.

Artistic style Rubinstein's work combines kinetic art, Op art, and Pop art with figurative imagery, drawing on Renaissance painting, Surrealism, geometric abstraction, photography, and cinema. His compositions tend to feature recognizable portraits and cultural references rather than purely abstract geometric patterns.

Many of his later works use 22-karat gold leaf, silver leaf, and reflective materials. and Liberté–Égalité–Mbappé for a 2019 auction.

Exhibitions Rubinstein has exhibited in galleries, museums, and art fairs in Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East.

In 2014, he held Meeting with the Giants, a retrospective exhibition in Singapore. In 2022, Dalí Paris exhibited Optical Games, a series of works by Rubinstein made in response to Salvador Dalí's work. ' In 2025, Dalí Paris presented Dalí x Rubinstein: Crossed Illusions, examining connections between his work and Salvador Dalí. In 2026, Rubinstein took part in Beyond the Visible, a joint exhibition with Yaacov Agam at Bruno Gallery in Singapore.
