Oscar Athié

Óscar Eduardo Athié Furlong (born 3 February 1958) is a Mexican singer and songwriter of romantic ballads. He was a popular recording artist in Mexico during the 1980s, and his best-known song is "Fotografía" (1983). He stopped recording in the early 1990s to concentrate on the hospitality sector in Acapulco.

Early life

Athié was born in Acapulco. He studied medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, qualifying as a surgeon and obstetrician.

His debut album Conóceme ("Get to know me") appeared in 1982 and included "Perdóname por no poder quererte" ("I'm sorry I couldn't love you"), the first song he recorded and one of his own compositions.

Athié's relationship with the actress Érika Buenfil during the 1980s attracted press attention; Buenfil has said the two were together for around eleven years and that the relationship ended when Athié did not attend a family gathering arranged to announce their engagement. Athié has said that "Fotografía" was written after one of their separations.

In May 2014 he was detained in Acapulco by the Federal Ministerial Police in connection with alleged violations of Mexico's federal tax code, alleging that he had changed his registered fiscal address without notification and concealed accounting records involving approximately one million pesos (about U.S. dollars at the time). He was released three days later on bail of 20,000 pesos (about U.S. dollars at the time).
