About Muhammadu Aminu
Muhammadu Aminu was a Nigerian politician.
Muhammadu Aminu (1908 – 4 February 1975) was the 17th Emir of Zazzau, serving from September 1959 until his death in February 1975. He succeeded Ja'afaru Dan Isiyaku and was succeeded by Shehu Idris. As Emir, he also served as Chairman of the Zazzau Emirate Council during a period that spanned the final months of British colonial rule in Northern Nigeria and the first fifteen years of Nigeria's independence.
Early life and career
Muhammadu Aminu was born in 1908 into the Katsinawa ruling house, one of the four recognised ruling dynasties of the Zazzau Emirate alongside the Barebari, Sullubawa and Mallawa houses. Before his accession to the throne, he served as the District Head of Sabon Gari under the Zaria Native Authority administration.
Selection as emir
Following the death of Emir Ja'afaru dan Isiyaku in August 1959, the council of kingmakers selected Muhammadu Aminu as the next Emir of Zazzau. His appointment continued the traditional rotational succession among the recognised ruling houses of the emirate.
Coronation
Muhammadu Aminu was formally installed as Emir in September 1959. The coronation ceremony took place outside the Emir's Palace in Zaria and was attended by senior officials of the Northern Nigeria Government, including Premier Sir Ahmadu Bello. During the ceremony, he took the oath of office before the Chief Imam of Zaria and received the Staff of Office from the Governor of Northern Nigeria before district heads paid homage to the new emir.
Reign
Muhammadu Aminu reigned during an important transitional period in Nigerian history. His reign began shortly before Nigeria attained independence in October 1960 and continued through the First Republic, the Nigerian Civil War, and the early years of military administration. As Chairman of the Zazzau Emirate Council, he supervised the traditional administration of the emirate and worked with successive regional and federal governments. Contemporary accounts describe him as calm, patient, disciplined and respected for maintaining harmony within the emirate's ruling houses and its diverse population.
His personal secretary during part of his reign was Shehu Idris, who later succeeded him as the 18th Emir of Zazzau in 1975.
Death and succession
Muhammadu Aminu died on 4 February 1975 after reigning for approximately sixteen years. Four days later, on 8 February 1975, Shehu Idris was installed as the 18th Emir of Zazzau.
