John Maskas

John James Maskas (August 15, 1920 – February 9, 1983) was a Greek-American professional football guard who played for the Buffalo Bills of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). He played college football for the VPI Gobblers and North Carolina Tar Heels, and was selected by the Boston Yanks in the 14th round of the 1944 NFL draft.

Early life John James Maskas was born on August 15, 1920, in Chios, Greece. He immigrated to the United States as a child. He attended Monessen High School in Monessen, Pennsylvania. He transferred to the University of North Carolina, where he was a letterman for the Tar Heels in 1943. Maskas was named first-team All-Southern Conference by the Associated Press (AP) at tackle for his performance during the 1943 season. He then served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, and was a veteran of the Battle of Guadalcanal. He wrestled and boxed at VPI as well.

Professional career Maskas was selected by the Boston Yanks in the 14th round, with the 142nd overall pick, of the 1944 NFL draft.

Maskas signed with the Yanks on July 19, 1948. However, he was released before ever playing for the Yanks. He played in 11 or 12 games for Buffalo during the 1949 AAFC season.
