About Jeffrey R Powell

Born 1948. Jeffrey R Powell is an evolutionary biologist.

Jeffrey R. Powell is an American evolutionary geneticist and professor emeritus at Yale University. He is known for his research in molecular evolution, population genetics, and the genetics of Drosophila and disease-vector mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti. He served as President of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution (SMBE) in 2005.

Early life and education Powell completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, graduating with a B.S. in biology. In 1969 he began graduate work at The Rockefeller University under Theodosius Dobzhansky, focusing on empirical population genetics using Drosophila. In 1971 he moved with Dobzhansky to the University of California, Davis, where he received his Ph.D. in genetics in 1972.

Career Powell joined the Yale University faculty in 1972 as an assistant professor in the Department of Biology (later Ecology and Evolutionary Biology). He has remained affiliated with Yale throughout his career, later serving as professor, research professor, and professor emeritus. He has held adjunct appointments in the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and the School of Public Health (Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases). Since 1994 he has also been an Overseas Fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge.

In 2005 he was elected president of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution, the leading international scholarly society in the field of molecular evolution.
