Early life James Monroe was born in New York in 1816. James' father was Stephen Monroe.
Career In 1848, Monroe started a stove manufacturing shop. He continued this business until 1859. In 1854, Monroe attended the organization of the Michigan Republican Party, in Jackson. Monroe also spent the mid-1850s securing land grants for railroad companies.
Personal life Monroe married Harriet around 1841. Together, they had five children.
