Honours and awards Recipient of the Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship, France, 1973 Writer in Residence, Berlin Kuenstler Program, 1983 National Library of New Zealand Research Fellow, 1999 Berlin Writers' Residency 2009 funded by Creative New Zealand, the national agency for the development of the arts in New Zealand. Recipient of the 2010 Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement in non-fiction. Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, 31 December 2010 New Year Honours. President of Honour of the New Zealand Society of Authors, 2012–2013
