About Gustav Hügel

Lived 1871 – 1953 (aged 81–82). Gustav Hügel was an Austrian figure skater and figure skating judge.

Gustav Hügel (1871—6 April 1953) was an Austrian figure skater. He was a three-time (1897 and 1899-1900) World Champion and the 1901 European Champion. He won the German national championships in 1894 because, at that time, Austria and Germany held joint championships.

Career Hügel was the son of the publisher and editor in chief of the Wiener Vorstadt-Zeitung newspaper. He began ice skating when he was 12 and was trained by Leopold Frey. He placed 6th in his first European Championships in 1892, the only time he placed lower than second in a major international competition.

He did not compete in 1893 due to being required to fulfill military service. and he placed second at the 1894 European Championships.

After his competitive career, Hügel worked as a coach and owned a sports complex in Hietzing that acted as tennis courts in the summer and an outdoors ice skating rink in the winter. Skaters he coached included:

Death Hügel died 6 April 1953. He was buried in Feuerhalle Simmering in Vienna.
