Gabriel Jackson

Gabriel Jackson (March 10, 1921 – November 3, 2019) was an American Hispanist, historian and journalist.

Biography Jackson was born into an educated Jewish family in Mount Vernon, New York, in 1921. He developed early a passion for playing the flute and followed the developments of Spanish Civil War in the newspapers as a teenager.

He studied history and literature under Americanists Perry Miller and F. O. Matthiessen at Harvard University. After obtaining his AB degree in 1942, he spent two months on a Harvard travelling fellowship in Mexico City, where he lived among Spanish Republican exiles, including the widow of former Spanish President Manuel Azaña. He served his country for four years in the Pacific War as an aircraft mechanic, photo interpreter, and cartographer. During the 1940s, he developed friendships with veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. He taught English, Spanish, and flute at The Putney School in Vermont from 1946 to 1949, before earning a master's degree at Stanford University in 1950 with a thesis on the educational program of the first Azaña government (1931–33). He then spent two years among Spanish Republican exiles in southern France as a Fulbright fellow along with his wife, and completed a PhD on the Regenerationist leader Joaquín Costa at the University of Toulouse under the supervision of Jacques Godechot in 1952. He advised the Hispanic Foundation of the Library of Congress on Spanish history acquisitions. Jackson was a regular collaborator of the Spanish daily El País for many years. In 1966, he was awarded the American Historical Association's Herbert Baxter Adams Prize for his 1965 book The Spanish Republic and the Civil War, and in 2002, Spain's prestigious Nebrija Prize from the University of Salamanca.

After his retirement in 1983 he lived in Barcelona, Spain. He returned to the United States in the last decade of his life.

He had joined the American Historical Association, Phi Beta Kappa, and the American Association of University Professors before 1965.
