About Emily Hartshorne Mudd

Lived 1898 – 1998 (aged 99). Emily Hartshorne Mudd was an American mental health counselor, teacher and researcher.

Emily Borie Hartshorne Mudd (September 6, 1898 – May 2, 1998), was an early family expert, women's rights activist and birth control advocate. According to The New York Times, she "...helped lay the groundwork for virtually every aspect of professional marriage and family counseling." She earned a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work as well as a doctorate in Sociology (1950).

Career In 1927, Mudd founded Philadelphia's first birth control clinic. In 1956, she became the first woman appointed a full professor at the University of Pennsylvania's medical school. Mudd was voted mother of the year by The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1961. She later remarried.
