About Édouard-Jean-Étienne Deligny

Lived 1815 – 1902 (aged 86–87). Édouard-Jean-Étienne Deligny was a French politician and military officer.

Édouard-Jean-Étienne Deligny (12 December 1815 – 23 February 1902) was a French military officer born in Ballan, Indre-et-Loire, France. Little is known about his early life, family, or education before he entered military service.

Military career Following his graduation from the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr in 1835, Deligny was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 13th Light Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1840 and captain in 1844. That year, he was assigned to the Arab Affairs Bureau at Mascara and became its chief in 1845. In 1848, he was promoted to battalion commander of the 12th Line Infantry Regiment, followed by promotion to lieutenant colonel in 1852. In January 1853, he became colonel of the 60th Line Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1855 and to général de division in 1859.

From 1860 until 1869, Deligny served as commander of the Province of Oran in Algeria. In 1865, he was appointed Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. In 1869, he was appointed commander of the Camp of Châlons.During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, Deligny commanded a division of the Army of Metz. Following the capitulation of Metz in 1870, he became a prisoner of war. After the war, he was appointed to the Superior War Council in 1872. The following year, he assumed command of the 4th Army Corps. In 1879, Deligny was appointed Inspector General of Army Corps.
