Clarence Chipman

Clarence Campbell Chipman (May 24, 1856 – February 11, 1924) was a Canadian civil servant and business executive who served as commissioner of the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada from 1891 until 1911. As commissioner, he reorganized the company's Canadian administration, bringing its land, fur-trade, and retail operations under a more centralized structure. He also introduced more systematic commercial and record-keeping practices.

Early life and government career

Chipman was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, on May 24, 1856. His parents were John Allen Chipman and Abbie Whidden Brown. He was educated in Amherst and entered the Canadian civil service during the 1870s.

Chipman worked for the Canadian government in Agriculture, Public Works and Finance before transferring to the Department of Railways and Canals. He later became private secretary to Sir Charles Tupper and accompanied Tupper to London after his appointment as Canadian high commissioner.

The Big House underwent considerable annual maintenance while the Chipmans occupied it during the summer. The residence also became a setting for social activity. Chipman's use of the site therefore helped maintain its occupation and upkeep during his years with the Hudson's Bay Company.
