About Charles Herbert Mayo

Lived 1845 – 1929 (aged 83–84). Charles Herbert Mayo was a British anglican priest, writer, antiquarian and genealogist.

Charles Herbert Mayo (1845–1929) was a Dorset clergyman and antiquarian.

Life Charles Herbert Mayo was born at Salisbury on 28 February 1845, the younger son to Charlotte (née Dyer) and her husband, younger son of the Rev. William Mayo, rector of Folke, Dorset, and a grandson of the physician Robert Dyer. He was educated at Magdalen College School and won a scholarship to Lincoln College, Oxford. He matriculated at Oxford on 13 April 1864, aged 19, held his scholarship from 1864 to 1868, and graduated BA in 1868 and MA in 1871. His BA was a double second in classical honours, and in 1921 Oxford awarded him the degree of Doctor of Letters. In 1904 Mayo wrote to the vicar of Sherborne proposing a celebration in the following year to mark the 1,200th anniversary of the arrival of Aldhelm at Sherborne. The proposal eventually developed into the large historical pageant devised by Louis Napoleon Parker. Following a funeral at Long Burton, he was buried at Folke beside his father and his brother.

Legacy Mayo's correspondence and research papers are now held by the Dorset History Centre, except for a collection of typewritten notes about the Mayo family held by the Bodleian Library, and two volumes of notes about Bristol and Gloucestershire families held by the Gloucestershire Record Office.
