About Bilgesu Erenus

Lived 1943 – 2026 (aged 82–83). Bilgesu Erenus was a Turkish screenwriter, writer, poet, musician and playwright.

Bilgesu Erenus (13 August 1943 – ) was a Turkish playwright, screenwriter and activist. She began her career at the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, working as a producer and scriptwriter before switching to playwriting in 1973 when her play was staged at the . Her earlier plays focused on contemporary issues in Turkey, and included, (1979 or 1981), and (1984). Plays she wrote in the 21st century included (2004), which dealt with the Dersim massacre, and (2017), about the life of Turkish playwright Fatma Nudiye Yalçı.

Erenus was also politically active; she was the owner of the government-critical monthly and arrested or detained on multiple occasions in connection with her activism.

Early life and education Bilgesu Erenus was born in Gölpazarı, Bilecik, Turkey on 13 August 1943, to parents Avni and Aliye Duru. She continued to engage in activism during the period between the 1980 Turkish coup d'état to 1983 elections, ultimately being arrested by military courts and held in solitary confinement. After speaking against the military draft in the 1990s, she was arrested and sentenced to a year in prison by a military court.

She was the owner of the political journal . First published in 1987, it contained material critical of the Turkish government. In 1988, she, her husband, and their son were detained by the police, alongside other people involved in the journal's publication. Erenus was detained again later that year after participating in a panel.

Personal life and death Erenus married Müştak Erenus in 1967; the couple divorced in 1990.
