Arthur Edward Lyster (28 June 1858 – 1928) was an Irish mathematician, astronomer and educator. He was elected a Foundation Scholar in Mathematics at Trinity College Dublin in 1883, served as an assistant at Dunsink Observatory from 1892 to 1896, and later taught mathematics at King's Hospital School, Dublin. He was the author of Mathematical Facts and Formulae.
The Arthur Lyster Prize in Mathematics at Trinity College Dublin was established in 1951 under the will of his sister, Mary Alice Lyster, and continues to be awarded by the university.
Early life Lyster was born at Goresbridge, County Kilkenny, Ireland, on 28 June 1858.
Education Lyster studied at Trinity College Dublin, where he was elected a Foundation Scholar in Mathematics in 1883. He graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1885 and proceeded to the degree of Master of Arts in 1889.
Career Between 1892 and 1896 Lyster served as an assistant at Dunsink Observatory, then the observatory of Trinity College Dublin.
Following his work at Dunsink he became Mathematics Master at King's Hospital School, Dublin.
Publications Lyster was the author of:
Mathematical Facts and Formulae (1899).
The work was intended as a mathematical reference handbook for students and teachers.
Legacy Following the death of his sister Mary Alice Lyster, Trinity College Dublin received a bequest under her will in 1951 establishing the Arthur Lyster Prize in Mathematics. Trinity records that an additional sum was subsequently added by her executors.
The prize continues to be awarded to students in the School of Mathematics.
Lyster is buried with members of his family in the churchyard of All Saints Church, Newchurch, Isle of Wight.
