About Albert Chibuzo Agulanna
Albert Chibuzo Agulanna was a Nigerian politician.
Albert Chibuzo Agulanna (also rendered Albert Chibuzor Agulanna) is a Nigerian engineer, philanthropist and politician from Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. He is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and contested the 2023 general election for the Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
Early life and education Agulanna hails from Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. Publicly available independent sources do not provide a precise date of birth or detailed account of his early schooling. He is professionally identified as an engineer (commonly styled “Engr.”) and has co-authored academic papers in areas including oil extraction kinetics, bio-fertilizer production and related chemical/engineering topics.
Career Professional and philanthropic activities Before and alongside his political activities Agulanna has been described as a renowned engineer with experience in both the public and private sectors and as a philanthropist who has supported indigent and less-privileged persons in his community.
He initially won the PDP primary for the constituency. Following a legal challenge over the venue of the primary, the Court of Appeal (Owerri Division) voided the result and ordered a fresh primary within fourteen days. On 27 January 2023 Agulanna won the court-ordered re-run primary, polling 50 votes against 2 votes for Dr Ugochukwu Uzoma. The Imo State PDP publicly congratulated him and described the outcome as a reaffirmation of confidence in his candidacy.
Subsequent litigation continued. A Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier sacked him as candidate and ordered another primary; an Appeal Court in Owerri later barred a further re-run. In February 2023 the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) removed Agulanna’s name from the list of House of Representatives candidates, citing a court order. Agulanna challenged aspects of the process at the Supreme Court.
In the 25 February 2023 general election the Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala seat was won by Matthew Nwogu of the Labour Party. Agulanna (listed in some reports as the PDP candidate or runner-up) and the PDP petitioned the election tribunal. In May 2023 the tribunal struck out the petition, holding that Agulanna was never a valid candidate of the PDP and therefore lacked the legal standing to challenge Nwogu’s election.
The seat had previously been held by Bede Eke (PDP) from 2015 to 2023. Agulanna did not succeed Eke as the elected representative.
