Lived 1925 – 2022 (aged 97). Willard Gaylin was an American psychiatrist, university teacher and bioethicist.
Willard Marvin Gaylin (February 23, 1925 – December 30, 2022) was an American bioethicist and physician who served as a clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was also the co-founder, along with Daniel Callahan, of The Hastings Center, an independent research institute focused on bioethics. Gaylin served as the president of the Hastings Center from its inception, in 1969, until 1993 and as chairman of the board from 1993 to 1994. He was a member of the Center's board.
Biography Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Gaylin received his B.A. from Harvard College in 1947 and his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1951. He went on to earn a Certificate in Psychoanalytic Education from the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. For some 30 years he served on its faculty as a training and supervising psychoanalyst. From 1970 to 1980 he simultaneously served as Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia Medical School, Professor of Psychiatry and Law at Columbia Law School and adjunct professor at Union Theological Seminary.
