Early career Matongo attended Northwood School where he was Head Prefect and played rugby. After leaving school, he attended Stellenbosch University where he played for the Maties side.
Professional career Matongo was originally a member of the academy having joined after leaving school in Durban. Having attended university in the area, he joined the , making his debut in the Currie Cup for the in 2024. He made his debut for the Stormers in the 2024–25 European Rugby Champions Cup.
