About Stanton Smullens

Stanton N. Smullens is an American vascular surgeon, medical executive, and academic. He practiced surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia for nearly three decades and later held senior administrative roles in the Jefferson Health System, where he served as chief medical officer. He was the founding president and chief executive officer of JeffCare, the physician hospital organization of Thomas Jefferson University, and chaired the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority.

Patient safety Following the 1999 publication of the Institute of Medicine report To Err Is Human, Smullens testified on medical errors before a subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations, chaired by Senator Arlen Specter, at a hearing held on January 25, 2000, appearing as chief medical officer of the Jefferson Health System.
