Controversy
Following the 2024 Student-People's Mass Uprising, a reform movement emerged within the Department of English at the University of Dhaka, during which several faculty members faced criticism from students over their perceived roles during the uprising. Amid broader resentment toward senior academics and widely known intellectuals, whom protesters perceived as silent supporters of alleged human rights violations under the Hasina government, some Gen-Z students used the phrase "0% contribution, 100% celebration" to criticize senior academics, including Fakrul Alam. In July 2025, Mortuza responded to the controversy by publishing an opinion article in The Daily Star. In the article, he criticized Gen-Z slogans and commented on the protesters' socio-economic and religious backgrounds, which subsequently drew criticism from students and academics.
