About Sarkis Kasyan

Lived 1876 – 1937 (aged 61). Sarkis Kasyan was an Armenian party organizer, statesperson and opinion journalist.

Sarkis Hovhannesi Kasyan or Kasian (; , 1876 – December 11, 1937) was a Soviet Armenian statesman, politician, publicist and journalist.

He was arrested and later shot in 1937 during the Great Purge. He was posthumously rehabilitated.

Biography Sarkis Kasyan, whose real surname was Ter-Kasparyan, was born on January 28, 1876, in the town of Shusha in the Elisabethpol Governorate of the Russian Empire.

From November 1920 he was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia and chairman of the Revolutionary Committee of Armenia. He signed the declaration of the Sovietization of Armenia. On December 2, 1920, Vladimir Lenin sent him a telegram welcoming the establishment of Soviet Armenia. He was posthumously rehabilitated.

Besides his own political writings, Kasyan translated works by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels into Armenian. Until 2023, there was a street named after him in Yerevan․ Given his deep unpopularity stemming from his association with the establishment of the Soviet regime over Armenia, authorities renamed it Vazgen I Street.
