Sani Shuwaram

Sani Shuwaram (died February 2022, reported) was a Nigerian militant who served as a senior commander of the Islamic State's West Africa Province (ISWAP). Non-IS sources reported that he was appointed and sworn in as wali (leader/governor) of ISWAP in November 2021.

According to these reports, the appointment was made by ISWAP’s Shura (judicial) council. He was sworn in by a provincial judge, Bukar Arge, at a camp in the village of Kurnawa in the Lake Chad area (Abadam Local Government Area, Borno State). The ceremony was said to have been attended by representatives from the Islamic State’s core leadership. Shuwaram, then reported to be about 45 years old, succeeded interim or short-term leaders following the deaths of Abu Musab al-Barnawi and Malam Bako. He was described as the fifth figure recognised by the Islamic State as head of its West Africa province in that period.

Shuwaram’s tenure was brief. In March 2022, multiple Nigerian media outlets, citing intelligence and military sources, reported that he had been killed in February 2022 as a result of Nigerian Air Force airstrikes (including Super Tucano aircraft) targeting ISWAP positions in the Marte axis near Sabon Tumbuns / Kirta Wulgo in Borno State. He was said to have been wounded in earlier strikes and to have died later, possibly while receiving treatment. The Nigerian Air Force publicly declined to confirm the death of any specific ISWAP leaders at the time, stating that operations continued. Reports named Bako Gorgore (also rendered Mallam Bako Gorgore) as his replacement.

Little independent information is publicly available about Shuwaram’s earlier life or precise role before his reported elevation in late 2021. Coverage of ISWAP leadership changes in this period relies heavily on Nigerian security and intelligence sources filtered through local media and terrorism-monitoring organisations.
