About Sandra Black

Born 1969. Sandra Black is an American economist.

Sandra Eilene Black (born 1969) is a professor of economics at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her B.A. from UC Berkeley and her Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. Since that time, she worked as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and as an assistant, associate, and ultimately full professor in the Department of Economics at UCLA before arriving at the University of Texas at Austin in 2010. She became a Professor in the department of Economics at Columbia University in 2019, before returning to the University of Texas at Austin in 2025. In 2024 she was awarded the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award, given annually by the American Economic Association to an individual who has furthered the status of women in the economics profession.

Research

Her research focuses on the role of early life experiences on the long-run outcomes of children, as well as issues of gender and discrimination.
