About Rolf von Sydow
Lived 1924 – 2019 (aged 94). Rolf von Sydow was a German film director, screenwriter, writer, director and actor.
Rolf von Sydow (18 June 1924 – 16 June 2019) was a German film director and author.
Life Von Sydow worked as a film director in Germany. His mother Ilse Bayerthal was designated by German law a "half-Jew" so her son Rolf was accordingly a "quarter-Jew" Mischling which greatly impacted him as a child and later restricted his career options in Nazi Germany. He served as a soldier in the Wehrmacht, hiding his partial Jewish ancestry, was wounded and awarded medals for his combat service.
In 1947 he began working in Coburg at the local theater, and then he took up radio productions at Rundfunk im amerikanischen Sektor in West Berlin. He later worked on popular film adaptations of a number of novels by Rosamunde Pilcher along with the enormously popular German TV series Zwei Münchner in Hamburg in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Besides his extensive radio and film work, he was the author of numerous successful autobiographies including one describing life experiences as a prisoner of war after Operation Overlord in Normandy in 1944. He married on three occasions.
