Oskar Ibru

Oskar Eyovbirere Ibru (11 August 1958 – 24 September 2025) was a Nigerian businessman, shipping magnate and philanthropist. He served as chairman and chief executive officer of the Ibru Organisation, one of Africa's leading family-owned businesses.

Background and education Oskar Eyovbirere Ibru was born into the Ibru family on 11 August 1958, the eldest son of Michael Ibru. Ibru was educated at Corona School, military compound, Yaba, and later at St Andrew's Prep. He attended Igbobi College and Millfield for his secondary education before proceeding to Skidmore College, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree. He subsequently earned an MBA from Atlanta University in 1983.

Career Business Ibru returned to Nigeria in 1983 to join the family business. He began his career at The Guardian as a management trainee before moving into shipping with Emsee Shipping Lines Limited. He rose to the position of general manager and became managing director of the shipping company in 1992.

Beyond the family conglomerate, Ibru was active in the maritime industry. He was president of the governing council of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping (NCS) from 2006 to 2010, where he advocated for greater indigenous participation in the port and shipping industry. He was succeeded by former military vice president Mike Akhigbe.

Politics Oskar Ibru was also involved in politics and was regarded as a political leader in Delta State. In 2007, he contested the People's Democratic Party guber primary seeking the party's nomination. Following the outcome of the primary, he supported Emmanuel Uduaghan, who secured the party's nomination and went on to win the governorship election. Athough Ibru did not subsequently seek elective office, he remained involved in political affairs in Delta State and maintained influence within his constituency in Delta Central.

Philanthropy Ibru was chairman of the Dream Child Foundation, an NGO that aims to use the culture of music to empower and support the African child in partnership with the World Bank and KPMG. In 2023, the foundation's HoodTalk Music Festival in Ghana was endorsed by president Nana Akufo-Addo following Ibru's meeting with the president at Jubilee House. He was known for his patronage of the arts and cultural initiatives, as well as his philanthropic activities, particularly in the education and healthcare sectors.

Honours and awards Ibru was conferred an honorary doctorate degree by Igbinedion University in 2017 in recognition of his contribution to the education sector. He also received the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award from Rotary International in 2002.

Ibru was elected the first African commodore of the Apapa Boat Club and, in 2006, received the Maritime Personality of the Year Award from the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping. In 2019, he also received the Africa Travel Global Personalities Award in the hospitality category, alongside Samih Sawiris of Egypt. Marine Road in Apapa, now known as Oskar Ibru way, was renamed after him.

Chieftaincy titles Ibru, a traditional aristocrat, held a number of titles, including the Ochuko R'Ovie of Agbara-Otor, the Odomese of Olomu, the Otunba Boyejo of Ijebu Kingdom and the Seriki Majidi of Accra, Ghana. He bore the tribal honourific Olorogun, a title also borne by members of his family.

Personal life Family Ibru was married to Chief Wanda Ibru, a niece of the legendary publisher Wilbert Tatum. She is the curator of the Ijebu National Museum and owner of the Pathways Botanical Garden in Delta State. They had three children: Makashe Ibru, Chris Ebruba Ibru and Nenesi Ibru.

Wealth Ibru's fortune was linked to fisheries, oil and gas, shipping and hospitality. He owned the Lansdown Resort (Ibru Heights), Aburi, Ghana, as well as properties in Nigeria, England, Germany and America. Considered one of Nigeria's richest men, Ibru was once described by Channel 4 as a billionaire "akin to Aristotle Onassis" in terms of wealth and charisma.

Memberships He was a member of the Lagos Polo Club, the Metropolitan Club, the Ikoyi Club, and the Lagos Motor Boat Club Ibru was also a member of the Royal Enclosure at Ascot. Death Ibru died after a brief illness on 24 September 2025, at the age of 67. His death was announced on the floor of the National Assembly by deputy speaker Benjamin Kalu.
