Ooni Luwoo

Ooni Lúwo Gbàgìdá (; sometimes spelled as Luwoo) was the 21st Ooni of Ife, a paramount traditional ruler of Ile Ife, the ancestral home of the Yorubas in the 10th century.

She was the first and the only female paramount ruler of Ile-Ife believed to be the origin of Yoruba ethnic group in West Africa, succeeding Ooni Giesi and succeeded by Ooni Lumobi. Ooni Luwoo's reign remains the only one by a female in Ife to date. Her son Adekola Telu was the founder of the Iwo Kingdom. Luwo Gbagida was a descendant of Ooni Otaataa from Owode compound, Okerewe, and a descendant of the Lafogido lineage of Ile-Ife. She was married to Chief Obaloran of Ilode and gave birth to a son, Adekola Telu, who later became the founder and first Oluwo of Iwo. The current Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Dr. AbdulRasheed Adewale Akanbi, traces his lineage to her.

Reign

Luwo Gbagida is described in oral tradition as a disciplined, assertive, and innovative ruler. She commissioned the construction of decorative pavements and open-air courtyards paved with pottery shards, a practice that became a distinctive feature of Yoruba architecture in Ile-Ife. Potsherd pavements attributed to her reign are preserved in the Ile-Ife Museum.

She enforced strict laws equally across social classes and was described by oral tradition as intolerant of laziness and lawbreaking, qualities that earned her both admiration and the label of being "high-handed" by the council of chiefs. Following the end of her reign, the council of Obas reportedly resolved never again to appoint a woman as Ooni of Ife, making her reign a singular event in the institution's history.

Legacy

Luwo Gbagida is celebrated as a pioneering symbol of female leadership in Yoruba history. Her son Adekola Telu founded the Iwo Kingdom, establishing a royal lineage that endures to the present day. Her story was dramatised in Dimeji Sodeke's 2022 play Ooni Luwo: One Queen, Two Kings, which explored themes of sovereignty and defiance.
