Lim Yi Wei

Yang Berhormat Puan Lim Yi Wei (Chinese: 林怡威; pinyin: Lín yí wēi; born 27 November 1989) is a Malaysian politician who has served as a member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Kampung Tunku since May 2018. She is a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. She is former national treasurer for PH's youth wing, Angkatan Muda Harapan, DAP Socialist Youth's (DAPSY) international secretary, and DAP Wanita Selangor organising secretary.

Early life and education Lim was born in Ipoh, Perak to a family of teachers. She attended SMK (P) Methodist Ipoh and completed the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) at SMK Methodist (ACS) Ipoh. In 2013, she graduated from the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Finance.

Political career Spurred by the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement, Lim returned to Malaysia in January 2016 to enter politics. She began her political career as the political secretary of Tony Pua, former Damansara Member of Parliament (MP), and was appointed a local councillor at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) in September. and the Selangor Psychiatric Treatment Subsidy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lim called for a moratorium on prosecutions against suicide survivors and advocated for the repeal of Section 309 of the Penal Code (Malaysia), which criminalised attempted suicide. The advocacy was conducted together with Subang Jaya assemblywoman Michelle Ng and Bandar Kuching Member of Parliament Dr Kelvin Yii, with the aim of replacing punitive measures with mental health support.

Lim is a co-founder of the PJ Startup Festival to bring the startup ecosystem and digital economy opportunities to local communities, jobseekers, and students. She also actively supports sports development, namely the Selangor rugby men’s and women’s teams, frisbee, futsal and skateboarding.

During her term, Sungai Way New Village underwent a transformation, including the establishment of the Sungai Way History Corridor, the first new village history corridor in Selangor, resulting in increased tourist traffic and solidifying Sungai Way as a food and cultural hub.

Lim is a Professional Fellow under the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI). She spent four weeks at the Massachusetts General Court with the offices of State Representative Michael Moran and State Senator Jamie Eldridge. She was also an invited study-group speaker at the Harvard University Institute of Politics.

In 2019, Lim was named one of Prestige Magazine’s 40 Under 40.

Selangor Rugby Union presidency

In February 2024, Lim was elected President of the Selangor Rugby Union (Kesatuan Ragbi Selangor), becoming the first woman to lead the rugby governing body in Malaysia. She was elected unopposed and served for the 2024–2026 term.

As president, Lim stated that she aimed to strengthen Selangor's rugby development, including rebuilding the state's competitiveness in domestic rugby competitions and expanding grassroots participation.

Para SUKMA 2026

In 2026, Lim was appointed as the Chef de Mission (Ketua Kontinjen) of the Selangor contingent for Para SUKMA 2026. She led the state contingent in preparations for the games, including athlete welfare and team coordination.

As the contingent leader, Lim emphasised the importance of athletes' mental health and preparation ahead of the games.
