About John Lonsdale
Born 1937. John Lonsdale is a British historian, university teacher and africanist.
John M. Lonsdale (born 1937) is a British Africanist and historian. He is Emeritus Professor of Modern African History at the Centre of African Studies in the Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge.
As a schoolboy, Lonsdale spent three summer holidays during 1953β56 in Kenya where his father, Rupert Lonsdale, had just taken a job. Having attended Sherborne School in Dorset, in 1956 he started his national service as a subaltern in the King's African Rifles. He then went on to study history at Trinity College, Cambridge, completing a BA in 1961 and a PhD in 1964. His first teaching job was at the University of Dar es Salaam in 1964. Although retired from teaching, he remains a life fellow (Title E) of Trinity College, Cambridge.
