Jayaviravarman

Jayaviravarman is a king who reigned over the Khmer Empire from 1002 to 1011 AD.

The origin of this prince is uncertain: According Achilles Dauphin-Meunier, he was the rightful successor and brother of Udayadityavarman I, who lives climbing the pretensions of a usurper, Suryavarman I, but managed to stay in Yaçodhapura. George Coedès, who considers him a usurper, believes that Jayaviravarman was the prince of the city of Tambralinga (Nakhon Si Thammarat in Thailand), and that he takes power and reigns in Angkor. MJ Boisselier awards him Ta Keo. In any case, Jayaviravarman disappears after a nine-year civil war, a length given by the inscription K.834 from Tuol Don Srei. Both he and Suryavarman I were consecrated in 1002, following the death of Udayadityavarman I the previous year.

The most recent studies found that Jayavirahvarman only controlled the western part of the kingdom. To the east, the region was of Suryavarman I with the strongholds in Sambor and Kratié. Suryavarman I later span influence westward to Kampong Thom and finally took over the Akorian throne. After losing the throne, Jayaviravarman evacuated to Battambang and then to his homeland, Vimayapura. The Wat Cong Ko inscription (K.1249) from Nakhon Ratchasima province, dated 1008, records a donation by him to the god Vimāya at Phimai after the loss of Angkor; U-tain Wongsathit and his co-authors take this to show that he retained authority on the Khorat Plateau and was probably its ruler, perhaps of the Mahidharapura line, and consider that he probably died there.
