About Indira Hinduja

Born 1943. Indira Hinduja is an Indian gynecologist, physician and obstetrician.

Indira Hinduja (born 21 August 1946) is an Indian gynecologist, obstetrician and infertility specialist based in Mumbai. She pioneered the Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) technique resulting in the birth of India's first GIFT baby on 4 January 1988. Previously she delivered India's second test tube baby at KEM Hospital on 6 August 1986. She is also credited for developing an oocyte donation technique for menopausal and premature ovarian failure patients, giving the country's first baby out of this technique on 24 January 1991.

Academic career Hinduja graduated from Topiwala National Medical College and B. Y. L. Nair Hospital, Bombay, in 1967. She subsequently obtained a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (1969), a Diploma in Family Planning (1970), and an MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (1972) from the University of Bombay. In 1988, she received a PhD in Applied Biology from the University of Bombay for her thesis titled ‘‘Human In Vitro Fertilisation and Embryo Transfer ’’.

Hinduja has served as an honorary obstetrician and gynecologist at P.D. Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre Mumbai.

She was associated with Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College and King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, where she collaborated with the Institute for Research in Reproductive Health ( now the ICMR–National Institute for Research in Reproductive and Child Health) on research in assisted reproductive technology, including in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and embryo transfer.
