Herbert W. Parke

Herbert William Parke (7 September 1903– 20 January 1986) was an Irish classicist who was professor of ancient history at Trinity College Dublin from 1934 until 1973, and the college's librarian from 1949 until 1965.

Early life and education Herbert William Parke was born in Moneymore, Ireland on 7 September 1903, to civil servant William Parke and Bertha . He attended the Coleraine Academical Institution in County Londonderry until his family moved to northern England, when he enrolled in Bradford Grammar School.

Parke went to Wadham College, Oxford on a scholarship in 1922. He took firsts in Honour Moderations in 1924 and Literae humaniores in 1926. He was a prolific writer, often publishing in journals such as Hermathena. In 1953, Parke also supervised the rebinding of the 9th century Book of Kells into four volumes. In 1967, he published two further books: Greek Oracles and The Oracles of Zeus.
