Germán Vergara Donoso

Germán Vergara Donoso (Constitución, 6 March 1902 – Santiago, 14 April 1987) was a Chilean lawyer, political scientist, diplomat, and politician. He served as a Minister of State — in the portfolio of Foreign Affairs — during the administrations of Presidents Gabriel González Videla and Jorge Alessandri.

Family and education Vergara was born in Constitución on 6 March 1902, the son of judge Ramón Antonio Vergara Rodríguez and Elena Donoso Bascuñán. He completed his primary and secondary education at the Colegio de los Sagrados Corazones in Santiago, and his higher education at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the University of Chile, where he qualified as a lawyer in 1924.

Public life In 1921, Vergara entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of his country. He served as secretary in Brussels (Belgium) in 1925 and in Lima (Peru) in 1929. Between 1932 and 1938, during the second administration of President Arturo Alessandri Palma, he held the position of Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs.
