About François Chassagnite

Lived 1955 – 2011 (aged 55). François Chassagnite was a French trumpeter and singer.

François Chassagnite (June 21, 1955, Ussel - April 8, 2011, Nice) was a French jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist, vocalist, composer and educator. He was know for his lyrical improvisation, warm tone and understated style and is considered one of the leading French jazz trumpeters of his generation. During a career spanning more than three decades, he performed alongside numerous major figures in French and international jazz and was an influential teacher at conservatories in southeastern France.

Early life and education Chassagnite was born on 21 June 1955 in France, the son of a military officer. He first learned the bugle before progressing to the cornet and trumpet. His earliest musical interest centered on traditional New Orleans jazz, particularly the recordings of Louis Armstrong. As his musical taste developed, he became increasingly influenced by modern jazz trumpeters such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Booker Little and Kenny Dorham. Although deeply committed to music, Chassagnite initially persuade higher education in veterinary medicine. After qualifying as a veterinarian, he briefly entered professional practice before deciding to leave the profession and devote himself entirely to a career in jazz.

Career Chassagnite established himself on the French jazz scene during the late 1970s and early 1980s, performing with numerous ensembles and becoming associated with some of the country's most prominent musicians and orchestras. His collaborators included Gil Evans, Laurent Cugny, Gérard Badini, Antoine Hervé, Andy Emler, and Steve Grossman, among many others French and international jazz performers, and he was a member of the Orchestre Nationa de Jazz during one of its formative periods.
