After leaving the BBC, Parker continued to work as a freelance composer and sound designer. Her credits Channel 4's The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the BBC series Weird Nature and The Human Body, presented by Robert Winston.

Her radio drama work has included productions of The Pallisers, No Commitments, Stephen King's Salem's Lot, The Tales of Narnia, The Secret Garden, and The Night Garden . She also created electronic sound and sound effects for television programs, including three series of Blake's 7, The Day of the Triffids, and the Doctor Who serial, The Stones of Blood.

Biography

Parker studied music at the University of East Anglia, graduating in 1973. She subsequently became the university's first recipient of a master's degree in electronic music in 1974. She was later awarded an honorary doctorate by Staffordshire University in recognition of her contributions to electronic music.

Career Parker joined the BBC in 1975 as a studio manager before transferring to the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1978. There she became one of the Workshop's principal composers, succeeding Delia Derbyshire. Working with analogue tape machines, synthesizers, and later digital sampling technology, she composed music and created sound design for hundreds of television and radio productions.

Parker also arranged Gabriel Fauré's short work Pavane for choir, which the BBC used as their theme tune for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Parker continued to work on various television productions as a freelance composer. She wrote music for the BBC One documentary The Human Body and was commissioned to write new music for the soundtrack of a re-release of the comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

In July 2023, Parker released Future Perfect, her first album under her own name, through Trunk Records. The release renewed interest in her contributions to British electronic music and was accompanied by extensive interviews in which she reflected on her work at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, including collaborations with David Attenborough on The Living Planet, her sound design for Blake's 7

Musical style and legacy Parker's work is noted for combining classical musical training with experimental electronic techniques. Throughout her career she adapted from analogue tape editing and early synthesizers, including the EMS Synthi 100 and PPG Wave, to digital recording and sampling technologies. Her compositions frequently integrate environmental sounds, orchestral textures, and electronic synthesis, particularly in documentary and natural history programming. The David Attenborough documentary series The Living Planet. An LP of Parker's score for the series was released in 1984. The science fiction television series Doctor Who. Parker provided special sound for the 1978 story The Stones of Blood, and the incidental score for the 1985 story Timelash under the name Liz Parker. Parts of this score are featured on the Doctor Who: 30 Years at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop compilation. The BBC Radio 4 adaptations of Iris Murdoch's novels The Bell and The Sea, the Sea. The BBC Radio 3 broadcast of Harold Pinter's play Moonlight.
