Edward Marlow McIntyre Sr. (November 16, 1931 – August 14, 2004) became the first African American mayor of Augusta, Georgia, in 1981. He had previously served as a county commissioner for Richmond County since 1970, as the first black candidate to win the office. He maintained he was innocent. After his release in 1985, he mounted three unsuccessful campaigns for the mayoralty, in 1990, 1998 and 2002.
A graduate of Morehouse College, McIntyre worked for the Pilgrim Health Life Insurance Company before entering politics.
