Damien Cain

Damien Cain (born Marc Sieper) is a German-born singer-songwriter and producer based in Ireland. He has released music with the bands Celtic Crypt and CAIN, as well as under his own name.

Career

Cain began recording music in the late 1980s with the progressive art rock project Celtic Crypt. In the 1990s, he released music under the name CAIN, combining elements of gothic rock and alternative rock.

In the mid-1990s, Cain wrote Dracula – The Musical (1995), which was staged for two years in the Ruhr area in Germany.

Cain also worked as a lyricist and producer. In 2006, he contributed the lyrics for the song Dein Herz by the Austrian band L'Âme Immortelle, which entered the German single charts.

He later collaborated with actor Christopher Lee on the project Edgar Allan Poe: Visionen, for which he wrote lyrics. The material was reissued in 2025 to mark the tenth anniversary of Lee’s death.

CAIN

The band CAIN originated as a studio project contributing music to the German audio drama series Geisterjäger John Sinclair. The track Age of Darkness was used as an end-credit theme in multiple episodes released in 2000. A full-length version later appeared on a special edition of the series.

The song was released as a single by Warner Music. According to media reports, the release was later certified with an Impala Diamond Award for exceeding 250,000 units sold.

In 2012, Damien Cain produced the compilation Dark Symphonies and contributed two songs of CAIN, which also featured artists such as Xavier Naidoo, Nena, H-Blockx and Kreator. The album entered the German album charts.

Reunion and present activities

CAIN reunited in 2010. New material was written by several composers, including Andy Matern, Burkhard Ballein and Ricky Gee. In 2013, the album Moonstruck was released, featuring guest contributions by Wayne Hussey of The Mission (band). The album entered the German Alternative Charts at number 10.

Following the release, CAIN performed as a live band between 2013 and 2015, appearing at festivals such as Nocturnal Culture Night and Castle Rock Festival and venues like the Turbinenhalle Oberhausen and E-Werk in Cologne.

In 2015, the single Raise was released, based on the theme music of the John Sinclair series.

Cain relocated to Ireland in 2020, after which CAIN ceased activities as a live band.

In December 2025, Cain released the 17-track-album Standarte, including three CAIN tracks recorded in connection with the 25th anniversary of Age of Darkness, featuring vocalist Kirstin New.

In January 2026, Standarte entered both the German Alternative Charts and the American Alternative Charts, reaching a peak position of number 4.

A remastered version of the song Caleb, featuring UK singer Jamie Wiltshire, is scheduled for release in May 2026. The duet has been described in media coverage as addressing themes of memory, loss and a same-sex relationship narrative.

Musical style

Cain's work spans multiple genres. His early project Celtic Crypt combined elements of progressive rock, gothic rock and independent music. The later material of CAIN is more closely associated with gothic rock and gothic metal.

In his solo work, Cain incorporates a broader range of styles, including alternative rock, metal and pop rock, alongside occasional influences from industrial and Celtic music.

Reception

The re-release of the track Elenore was reviewed by the music blog Edgar Allan Poets, which described the orchestration as “merging classical elements with modern lyrical dramatics” and noted that the arrangement “feels timeless” and “epic and immersive”.

The German magazine Zillo characterized the 2013 album Moontstruck as “classic goth rock influenced by bands like The Sisters of Mercy, Kamelot, Nightwish or Evanescence”.

In an interview feature, the music blog ProgRockJournal described the Cains 2025 album "Standarte" as reflecting “three decades of music” and noted its combination of “emotion, atmosphere, and narrative in rock”.

On 28 January 2026, radio host Adam Cunningham of Midlands 103 compared the first track of the album Fascinating Face to the sound of Breaking Benjamin, placing it within the alternative metal genre.

The German magazine Sonic Seducer described the album as “less ornament, more substance”, highlighting its balance between earlier influences and a more contemporary sound.

In its March/April 2026 issue, Orkus mentioned the stylistic range of the album, describing it as “rocky, gloomy, sometimes even veering into nu-metal territory and at the same time with an Irish touch.”

The Austrian SLAM Alternative Music Magazine described Standarte as musically set “between dark rock and Irish folk” and “an anti-album in a fast-paced algorithm-driven world”.
